Uniform Information

Proper wear of the uniform is covered under CAPM 39-1.

Uniform items may be purchased at the following locations:

  • Vanguard: The official online uniform provider for CAP.
  • Travis Air Force Base: You will need a CAP ID to enter the base. The clothing store is in the Mini-Mall, building #650. Smaller uniform sizes may be hard to find.
  • Airman’s Attic: Thrift store located on Travis AFB. Requires a CAP ID. Uniform items are gently used and are FREE. Not all uniform items may be available.
  • Alameda Surplus Store: Military surplus store located in Oakland. Not all uniform items may be available.
  • Victory Stores: Military surplus store located in Vallejo. Not all uniform items may be available.

Squadron Cap

  • Cadets receive a free squadron cap upon joining. If you lose your cap, you will need to purchase a new one from your squadron commander.

ABU Cover

  • Camouflage ABU covers (hats) are necessary for group and wing level activities.
  • If purchasing from Vanguard, their sizing chart tends to run small. Consider purchasing at a size larger than their sizing chart recommends for your head size.

ABU Blouse

  • Ironed
  • Creases in sleeves
  • Pockets buttoned

ABU Pants

  • Ironed
  • Creases down front and back of pants legs, parallel to each other
  • Pockets buttoned

Insignia

  • Worn one inch from leading edge of collar, centered, and parallel
  • Grade insignia is worn on both sides of collar
  • Insignia will be provided by the squadron upon achievement of each rank

Name Tape

  • On wearer’s right pocket
  • Last Name only and in all capital letters
  • Full length of the top of the pocket

CAP Tape

  • On wearer’s left pocket
  • Full length of the top of the pocket
  • “Civil Air Patrol” NOT “U.S. Civil Air Patrol”

Undershirt

  • A standard Desert Tan short or long-sleeved t-shirt will be worn under the ABU blouse.
  • This shirt is also used as part of the PT uniform.

Belt

  • Khaki nylon rigger belt with black buckle

Boots

  • Black Combat or Tactical Leather Boots
  • Should be high up on leg (at least 8 inches tall)
  • Highly polished leather
  • Laces tucked in

Socks

  • Black Socks that extend higher on leg than boots

Blousing Bands

  • Two types, green standard ones or black thick elastic ones – your preference

Fleece Jacket – Foliage Green (Optional)

  • Worn over the ABU. Note: You are authorized to wear any dark colored civilian jacket over your ABUs if you are cold.
  • You will need to purchase an additional CAP embroidered name tape specific to the fleece jacket. It has a black hook closure (velcro). Last name only in all caps.
  • You will also need to purchase an additional CAP embroidered Civil Air Patrol tape specific to the fleece jacket. It has a black hook closure (velcro).
  • NCOs should purchase a blank CAP fleece rank tab. NCOs wear pin-on insignia of rank on this tab.
  • Officers should purchase the appropriate fleece rank tab.

Note to New Cadets: Upon achievement of your first rank you will be emailed a special link to Vanguard and a voucher (Curry Blues Voucher) that will cover the bulk of the cost of this uniform. Do not purchase any of these uniform items until then.

Flight Cap

  • Male and Female Flight Caps are different shapes
  • The cap extends approximately one inch from the eyebrows in front
  • If not worn, tuck under the belt on wearer‘s left side, between the first and second belt loops (cap will not fold over belt or be visible below service coat).

Flight Cap Insignia

  • 1 ½ inches from edge, centered

Shirt

  • Short sleeve dress shirt differs for males and females, but females are authorized to wear the male shirt
  • Female shirt (overblouse) has no pockets and is worn untucked

Grade Insignia

  • 1 inch from leading edge of collar, centered, and parallel
  • Grade insignia is worn on both sides of collar
  • Insignia will be provided by the squadron upon achievement of each rank

Name Plate

  • Available only from Vanguard

Ribbon Rack and Ribbons

  • The size of your ribbon rack will match your number of ribbons.
  • Check with your cadre before purchasing a ribbon rack as the squadron keeps many sizes available.
  • In general, there is no need to purchase ribbons unless you have lost one. Ribbons are provided when you earn an achievement or complete an activity such as encampment that has an associated ribbon.

Undershirt

  • A white v-neck t-shirt will be worn under the shirt. No tank tops.

Belt

  • Air Force Belt: Blue Elastic with Mirror Buckle and Tip
  • Sold in male and female versions
  • Silver tip extends to left for males and right for females. No blue fabric should show.

Pants or Skirt

  • Females are authorized to wear either slacks or skirt.
  • Males are authorized to wear male trousers.

Shoes

  • Men’s oxford style patent leather high-gloss dress shoe.
  • Females wear the men’s style shoe.

Socks

  • Black socks, higher than the ankle

Additional Items (Optional but will make your uniform look better)

  • Shirt Stays or Garters: These attach to the bottom of the male shirt and either to the top of your sock (garter) or as a loop around your heel (stay). They serve the function of keeping your shirt pulled down and tucked in, so it does not billow around your waist.
  • Cardboard backing: Worn behind your flight cap insignia, grade insignia, ribbon rack, and name plate. This will hold your uniform items flatter, making your uniform look crisper. You can make cardboard backing by cutting up a standard shipping box.

  2. A standard Desert Tan short or long-sleeved t-shirt (undershirt from ABU). Tan shirts with lettering from group or wing activities (e.g. NCOS, Encampment, BCS, etc.) may be worn.
